When you speak to yourself out loud – not in your head, but actually using your voice – something changes. You can’t hide from your own voice the way you can hide from your own thoughts.

Most people haven’t had an honest conversation with themselves in years. They’ve had internal monologues. They’ve had self-criticism. They’ve had rehearsed explanations for imaginary audiences. But actual contact with their own voice? Rare.

The Mirror Minute is simple but it’s not easy.

HOW IT WORKS

Stand in front of a mirror. Set a timer for 60 seconds. Ask yourself one question – something real, not for show – and answer out loud without stopping. Don’t prepare. Don’t edit. Let words come out messy and uncertain and true.

Good questions to ask yourself:

What excites me right now?

What am i pretending is fine that isn’t?

What do i actually want?

What am i afraid to admit?

What would i do if i weren’t afraid of disappointing someone?

Ask one. Answer out loud. Don’t stop for 60 seconds. Keep talking even if it feels awkward or wrong or repetitive. Your brain will try to censor you. Keep going anyway.

What happens is this: your voice becomes your witness. You can’t bullshit your own voice the way you can bullshit your own thoughts. You hear yourself say things you didn’t know you believed. You hear the tremour when you’re lying. You hear the steadiness when you’re telling the truth.

WHY THIS WORKS

Your mind can rationalize anything. But your voice reveals things your mind is still trying to hide. That’s why this is uncomfortable. That’s also why it works.

The first time you do this, you might feel ridiculous. That’s normal. Second time it gets easier. By the third time, you stop performing for yourself and just speak.

DO THIS WHEN

When you’re stuck and can’t figure out why. When you need to check in with yourself about something. When you know you’re not being honest about something. Before a big decision. After a conversation that bothered you. Whenever you need to know what you actually think instead of what you think you should think.
