These are for when you need to shift your state right now. Not deep work. Quick access to calm down. Pick one. Use it anywhere. No one needs to know you’re doing it.
The 3-3-3 Reset
Three breaths in any rhythm that feels natural. Three things you can see without moving your head. Three points of contact, like feet on the floor, back against a chair, hands touching something solid.
This grounds you in what’s actually happening instead of the terrible futures your mind creates. The magic isn’t in the technique. it’s in finally giving your body evidence that you’re safe right here, right now.
This one works in meetings, in the queue at the grocery store, in the restroom before a difficult conversation. No one needs to know you’re doing it.
The 5-Senses Snap
Ten seconds per sense. One thing you see. One sound you hear. One texture you feel. One scent you notice. One taste in your mouth.
This works because your body believes sensory information over thoughts. “Everything’s fine” is just words your anxious mind will argue with. Actual sensory data is evidence that cannot be debated.
Use this when you notice yourself spiralling. The sensory focus interrupts the thought loop.
Box Breath
In for four counts, hold for four, out for four, hold for four. Repeat three times.
Can’t do four counts? Try three. Or six. Your body doesn’t care about perfect form. it just wants intentional breathing instead of the shallow, stressed breathing that runs on autopilot.
This is the most portable reset. You can do it anywhere, anytime, with eyes open or closed. Even one cycle shifts something.
Tactile Anchor
Hold something warm and feel its heat. Press your thumb firmly into your palm. Touch something cool, like a countertop or window. Your body believes touch over thoughts every time.
Keep something in your pocket—a smooth stone, a coin, anything you can reach for when you need grounding. Pick one. Try it now. Notice if anything shifts. The goal isn’t to feel amazing. it’s to feel slightly more settled. That’s enough to make better choices.
WHEN THIS USUALLY BREAKS DOWN
You’ll forget to use these tools when you actually need them. in the red state, the idea of pausing feels impossible. Your body is convinced that stopping means danger. So you keep pushing, keep reacting, keep running on empty.
The tools work. But only if you use them before you’re fully overwhelmed.
If you notice your shoulders climbing towards your ears, that’s your cue. Don’t wait until you’re fully in the red zone.
If you “don’t have the time” for a 60-second reset, that’s exactly when you need it most.
or anything worth discussing.
