You failed. And now the story is writing itself—and it’s a horror movie.

You’re incompetent. You’re not cut out for this. You’re a fraud. You should have known better. The spiral is already spinning. You catch yourself thinking things like “this is who i am” and “this proves i can’t handle this” and the voice gets louder and meaner.

What you need isn’t encouragement right now. Encouragement sounds hollow when you’re bleeding. You need extraction. You need to get the facts out before shame turns this into your identity. Before the narrative hardens.

HOW IT WORKS

Step 1: Let the wave hit. Set a timer. Ninety seconds. Feel it without fixing it. Just feel it. Don’t try to change it or explain it. Let the shame and anger and regret wash over you. Ninety seconds. That’s all you get. Then move to step 2.

Step 2: Get specific. Write exactly what happened. Not what it means about you. Facts only. “i said the wrong number in the meeting” not “i’m incompetent.” “i forgot to follow up” not “i’m disorganized.” Just the sequence. Plain. Factual. No interpretation.

Step 3: Extract the syllabus. What gap did this expose? What skill needs building? What would you do differently next time? Not a complete overhaul. Just: what specifically would i change? One thing.

Step 4: Take one micro-action within 48 hours. Not a complete life change. One small move that proves you’re not done. Maybe it’s a phone call. Maybe it’s a practice run. Maybe it’s writing an email. Something small. Something that shows you’re moving forward, not spiralling.

Wait longer than 48 hours, and failure hardens into a story. Shame festers. Self-doubt multiplies. Your brain rewrites the event with increasingly dramatic interpretations. You interrupt it with one action. Not a full rewrite. Not a 12-step change. Something you can do before the end of Thursday.

WHEN THIS BREAKS DOWN

You’ll do the autopsy in your head instead of on paper. it will turn into rumination instead of analysis. The story will harden before you’ve extracted the lesson.

If you’re spiralling instead of analysing, write it down. Pen on paper forces linearity. Your brain can’t spiral when it has to write facts.

If the “micro-action” feels pointless, do it anyway. Action interrupts shame spirals. Movement creates momentum.

If more than 48 hours have passed, do the autopsy anyway. Better late than fossilised.

If the failure is genuinely catastrophic, skip the tool. Get support first. Some failures need processing before productivity.
